T.J. Nelson Home Improvements: Our Company History

The company was founded in August of 1981 when the owner, Ted Nelson was 22 years old and living in a rooming house on Blinman Street in New London.

From its humble beginnings Ted named the business T. J. Nelson Home Improvements because of his desire to remodel homes in Connecticut and thereby, change the complexion of Southeastern Connecticut.

The first five years of the business were devoted to carpentry, roofing and painting jobs that required a minimum of employed staff. But as the business began to grow, it took on larger jobs and full time employees. The in home office moved to Garfield Avenue, then to Ocean Avenue and eventually to a commercial office store front at 9 Union Street in December of 1988. Earlier, that same year Ted incorporated the firm under it's official name T. J. N. Enterprises, Ltd., but still did business as T. J. Nelson Home Improvements.

In the 1980's and '90's, Ted began to join and align his efforts with organizations and clubs that had the communities' interests at heart. Such organizations as the Church, the Masons, the Shriners, March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity and Kiwanis just to name a few. In that spirit of giving back, Ted launched an interactive talk radio show on WSUB 980 AM in January of 1992. It was a two hour program on Saturday mornings called "Your Home Talk". In this genre Ted was able to receive live phone calls, on the air, from the local audience and give out free advice on how to fix up their homes. His faithful dog, Ginger, a Golden Lab mix lay under the consul during each broadcast until 1996.

In 1994 Peter Fernandez came to work as our Production Manager and soon rose to the rank of Vice President of T. J. N. Enterprises, Ltd. Under Pete's leadership the quality and craftsmanship of our Connecticut (CT) home remodeling projects have never been higher. He and his hand picked staff bring a touch of class to every job we undertake, whether it's replacing windows or a two story addition or anything in between. Pete and his staff stay up to date on all of the latest concepts of building designs and accessibility remodeling in Connecticut (CT).

In 2001 having searched for larger office space, Ted signed a five year lease on the lower level of 115 Huntington Street and the address to 36 Meridian Street because of the location of our parking lot and its view of signage across the street from the Radisson Hotel.

Since the late 1980's we have been completing home remodeling projects in Connecticut of all kinds including kitchen and bathroom additions, remodeling, raising the roofs of ranch homes to convert to a colonial style home, handicap lifts, elevators and ramps.
